Welcome to Comeauville
Comeauville, like Saulnierville draws its name from the dominant family name in the sector. In this case François (Maza) Comeau and Jean-Baptiste Comeau left their mark permanently on their land. These two gentlemen each owned large amounts of land in this area. The name was officially adopted when the issue came about to have the first post-office in Clare located in the village.
Located between Saulnierville and Comeauville flows the Comeau Brook on which the first sawmill and wheat (flour) mill was ever erected in Clare. In 1785, only two sawmills existed in Clare out of the ninety that existed in the entire province at that time. Not long after, many mills could be found on the Comeau Brook and elsewhere in Clare resulting in the development of new markets on “The Islands” one might say that Comeauville was the birth place of one of the two major industries in the St. Mary’s Bay area, fishing and lumber. In the summer of 2002, one of the few remaining sawmills on Comeau Brook, a family owned business, was lost to fire. The community was deeply saddened by the loss of this example of its traditional culture.
Today the village still offers consumers an opportunity to experience Acadian culture with small shops and restaurants and the head-quarters of the local radio station CIFA 10 4.1fm. Comeauville also boasts the only 18 hole golf course & country club in Clare..
