Welcome to Concessions
This village received its name from the fact that the Township of Clare was divided up into parcels of land or in other terms, concessions of land and handed to heads of families.
The title of Concession, sometimes used in the plural sense more often in French, Concessions, was given to the first village to be settled on these lots.
This was a logging and farming village. There are still porc farms operating in Concessions today. Until 1901, the residents of Concessions attended church in Church Point taking part in the Sainte-Marie Parish.
Along with the Concessionites, the residents of St-Joseph also took in church service in Church Point. These neighbouring in-land villages insistantly requested their own place of worship and the request was honoured.
Construction on the outside of the new parish church was completed in 1902. The construction was overseen by Léo Melanson, a very able local carpenter who could neither read nor write. Mr. Melanson also oversaw the building of the Sainte-Marie Church in Church Point.
Interestingly enough, the Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel Church in Concessions is the only church in Clare that has no pillars!
