Welcome to Grosses Coques
Named after the fact that large amounts of soft-shell and bar clams could be found in the sand and rocks at low tide.
Grosses Coques was the site of the first chapel in Clare and was chosen because at the time the village was a central location in the community. The chapel was built in 1774 under orders from Abbé Bourg during his visit to the area.
Upon his third visit to Clare, Abbé Bourg realized that the village of Grosses Coques was no longer a central location, and therefore had a second chapel built on the shore of what was then called Chicaben.
The village of Chicaben became known as Church Point due to this construction.
Today a large stone cross stands in Grosses Coques as a memorial to the first chapel of Clare. Though the date in the cross' inscription is incorrect, the monument remains a symbol of the Acadian pride and spirit and reminds locals as well as visitors of the hardships and humble beginnings of this township.
Along Route 1 in Grosses Coques a few artists and artisans operate shops and studios within their homes. One never knows what treasures they may find in these quaint shops. You may just find that unique piece of art or craft to brighten your day or your own home.
