Welcome to Salmon River
Home to one of Clare’s four main rivers that are fed by small lakes and other minor rivers, Salmon River like many others end its journey in marshlands that become submerged by the rising of the ocean tide.
This rich land allowed the local residents to develop medium sized farmlands and keep on average approximately 10 -25 heads of cattle, many sheep and pigs as well, and become a semi-commercial farm in the potato market.
Due to their exclusive location, the residents of Salmon River were somewhat at a disadvantage for church services.
The priest from Meteghan or occasionally Church Point would travel to the village a few times a year to celebrate mass in Salmon River. Since there was yet no church in which to worship, mass was held in the home of a local resident Mathurin Deveau.
The piece of furniture that was used in the home as the altar during mass can still be seen in the back room of the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Church which was finally built in the mid-1800’s to serve the parish that included the villages of Salmon River, Mavillette, Cape St. Mary’s and St. Alphonse.
