Welcome to St. Alphonse
Named after the patron saint of the parish and church. Adopted to identify the villages of, Bear Cove and Chéticamp-de-Clare.
There were a few reasons for the name change of the village, one being that the post-office found it difficult for mailing etc since there was already a Chéticamp in Nova-Scotia that one being on Cape Breton Island.
The St-Alphonse Church is one of the major tourist attractions in Clare and is definitely worth the trip to see its breath-taking hand-painted murals behind the sanctuary and the grotto in the corner that has miraculous water running through it.
The grotto was made to look like stone but is in actuality wood carved by a local carftsman. St-Alphonse is a wonderful village where the descendants of the original settlers still reside on their family land.
