Welcome to St. Benoni
This small area is actually part of the village of Meteghan River but received a different name when the time came to choose a title for this section’s school district.
Although this is a more residential area, it has a great photo opportunity to offer. Like many other villages in Clare, there are numerous ways to reach St-Benoni, the most common being a turn, right if travelling toward Digby and a left if travelling toward Yarmouth, onto Placide Comeau Road (commonly known as the High School Road) and then another right turn onto a minor side road watch for the small “St-Benoni” sign.
Once on this small side road, keep straight and you will reach a bridge from which you can see marvellous waterfalls from both sides. The best way to view the falls is to pull over on the side of the road and walk back to the bridge and enjoy the view of the Meteghan River making its way to St. Mary’s Bay.
The Meteghan River passes through many villages and interestingly enough is located directly in the geographical centre or heart of Clare. Sport-fishing for Salmon under the St-Benoni Bridge right after the large falls is very popular, and on the other side of the bridge in the smaller rapids, locals have been known to net “Gaspereau” or “Alewife” in large quantities just before the start of lobster season to sell as lobster bait to the fishers.
The net used is known to locals as a “corla”. Imagine a dome tent with its the cover removed and the floor a tightly stretched fish net. Attached at the top of the crossing overhead wires is a long wooden handle used to control the movement of the structure. The handle is set upon a pile of rocks or a specially built platform which allows the fishers some leaverage in order to lower and lift the net while fishing.
