Welcome to St. Bernard
This village takes its name from the patron saint of its parish and is home to the most majestic stone church on the French Shore that seats 1010 people and took builders 32 years to construct!
St. Bernard lends itself to mystery as do a few other Clare villages. This puzzling tale stems from stories of the old St. Bernard Church not very far from where the current church stands. A stained glass window, known to everyone as "The St. Bernard Rose" or "La rose de St-Bernard" because of its floral design, made its home above the sanctuary of the old church for many years.
Until…construction on the new St. Bernard church was completed and the time had come to demolish the old place of worship.
After the destruction, no shards of glass belonging to the St. Bernard Rose were to be found in the rubble. All that the townspeople could imagine was that someone had removed the beautiful window before the church was demolished.
But the question remains... where did it go? What's your theory?
A festival of fine music is also featured in St. Bernard on certain Sunday afternoons in the months of June, August and September.
A schedule of the performances as well as a complete information package for the Saint Mary's Bay area can be ordered through the Municipality of Clare's web site.
