Lobster
One of the Largest Industries in Clare
Lobster fishing is one of the largest industries in the Clare area and has been for many years. The exportation of lobster from the Saint Mary's Bay area began in 1872 to be exact.

In the beginning the abundance of fish, lobster, scallops etc. made it easier for fishermen of all types to provide for their families. Today with the shortage of some species, fishing has become more difficult and costly.

The Cape Islanders' longer trips to distant banks are necessary in order to produce a worthy catch. With only a little over six months to rake up as much as they can, every trip has to count. Still, the industry has experienced very few downturns and lobster has not diminished in its appeal or flavour.

Lobster is certainly a favourite among the many varieties of seafood found in Saint Mary's Bay.

Many enjoy it in cream sauces in pasta or in a hot lobster dish while others prefer to crack open those bright red shells themselves, remove the contents and eat straight lobster meat dipped in melted butter.

Garlic butter can be a very tasty twist. Fresh lobster is obviously always best and most of the local restaurants offer dishes featuring the delectable edible in various forms. Bon appetit!
