Among the first settlers in 1785 were six Acadian families named Saulnier.
The surname can be traced to 15th and 16th century workers on the salterns, or salt works, of Saintonge in SW France, and over time became known as ‘saulniers’. Their expertise was responsible for dyking the salt marshes of Acadia.
Saulnierville is home to the oldest parish church in the Municipality of Clare, Sacred Heart Church, built in 1879 by local carpenters and tradesmen. This beautiful landmark has magnificent stained-glass windows and a gold accented altar.
Saulnierville is also a commercial hub with a service station, pharmacy, shops and a gym, among others. Beside Clarence’s Shopping Mart is a road that leads to Comeau Sea Foods, the busiest seafood processing company in Clare, which produces a wide variety of high-quality seafood products distributed worldwide.
