Acadian Language

Appreciate the unique, earthy sounds of Acadian French in the Clare region, whose roots date back to 17th century France, with expressions borrowed from the Mi'kmaq and English.

Learn the local Acadian dialect of la Baie Sainte-Marie/Clare differs from that of other Acadian regions in the Maritimes and from the French of Louisiana, although we have many similarities.

The most distinctive feature of the local language is the pronunciation of certain vowel sounds. The "o" sound is pronounced like "ou" in words like homme, pomme, donner and connaître. The "ain" and "en" sounds are pronounced "onne" in words like pain, demain, rien and, chien. And sometimes, the pronunciation of words is completely different! Although the regional dialect is not quite universal French, the locals speak their language with pride and generally like to share these words with the curious.
